Insurance educator and former RIMS leader Hampton dies

John Hampton, professor of business at St. Peter’s University in Jersey City, New Jersey, and former executive director of the Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc., died Monday at age 79.

An Army veteran who went by the name Jack, Mr. Hampton completed master’s and doctorate degrees at George Washington University before teaching at various universities and serving as provost of The College of Insurance in New York, which is now part of St. John’s University.

In 2000, he was named executive director of RIMS. After leaving RIMS in 2004, he joined St. Peter’s.

A well-known speaker and author on risk management topics, Mr. Hampton previously wrote a column on enterprise risk management for Business Insurance.

In a statement, Gary LaBranche, RIMS CEO, said: “During his time with RIMS and throughout his distinguished career, Jack demonstrated an unwavering commitment to growing knowledge and professionalism in the risk management community.”
