Employees seek to change health plan’s automatic smoker surcharge

Employees of Georgia’s university system are challenging how the system’s health insurance plan automatically categorizes them as tobacco users and charges additional premium unless they opt out of that status, WABE reports. Employees who don’t smoke have to opt out every year to avoid the fee, and any lapse can result in a $200 a month surcharge.
