Risk managers: Check your list for Santa liability insurance

Those wishing to hire Santa Claus for parties and other shindigs are usually looking for that token beard and red suit, yet one newspaper this week highlighted another must-have for the list: liability coverage.

The Providence Journal wrote Sunday that while a Santa Claus lookalike is essential, so is insurance.

In addition to requesting a photograph of the Santa for hire and checking references and criminal background, Dan Greenleaf, operator of Santa placement service imsanta.org, told the newspaper that making sure he carries liability insurance is essential, and signs of a good Santa.

"He needs to know how to deal with kids. He needs to know how to take the role seriously and be professional,” Mr. Greenleaf advised.
