Brian Hall, a longtime leader in the captive insurance sector, died on Nov. 22 at age 80.

According to his online obituary, Mr. Hall died in Orange, Virginia, where he and his wife moved in 2000, with his family in attendance. The cause of death was not given.

Mr. Hall was born in Manchester, England, in 1942 but moved to Bermuda in 1953. He began his career in the island’s insurance sector with American International Group Inc. when he was 17. In 1964, he joined International Risk Management Group Ltd., which was led by captive pioneer Fred Reiss.

He later launched his own captive management company before joining Johnson & Higgins, where he was named CEO and president of the brokerage’s captive operations in 1979. J&H operated a worldwide captive management business and was by far the largest captive manager on Bermuda when the parent company was bought by Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc. in 1997.

Mr. Hall was a founder of the Bermuda Foundation of Insurance Studies in 1996 and remained actively involved in education efforts after his retirement in 1997. The BFIS will introduce the Brian Hall Memorial Scholarship next year.

Among several honors, Mr. Hall was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth in 1998 for services to Bermuda in insurance and education.
