A former soccer player, who was on the books of German club FC Schalke 04, has been sentenced to prison after apparently not dying in a life insurance scam.

According to Britain’s Daily Mirror, Hiannick Kamba, a Congolese native who was on Schalke’s youth team before spending the rest of his career in the lower leagues, faked his death in an auto accident after retiring in 2016 and his wife received a €1.2 million ($1.37 million) payout.

One of his former clubs even published his obituary, but he returned to Germany three years later, the paper reported. The former player explained his absence saying he’d been kidnapped and taken to a remote Congolese village, but the court was not convinced.

Mr. Kamba and his wife were sentenced to 3 years and 10 months in prison.
