Cleveland baseball team’s name problem resolved

Cleveland

The Cleveland Indians had apparently thought their name problems were behind them when they announced in July, in response to criticisms about their name evoking stereotypes, they were changing their name to the Guardians.

But the response of a local roller derby team also called the Guardians was, “not so fast.” The roller derby team filed suit against the team in October charging trademark infringement.

That may have given the baseball team second thoughts about rejecting the alternative names that had been suggested, which included the Spiders, Rockets, Buckeyes and Naps.

But the issue has now been settled amicably, according to a brief statement issued by the baseball and roller derby teams that did not disclose any more details.

Now all the baseball team has to worry about is the 2022 season.
