Poultry processor cited in worker deaths

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Tuesday announced it has cited a Gainesville, Georgia, poultry processor for 23 safety and health violations following an ongoing investigation of a Jan. 28 uncontrolled release of liquid nitrogen that killed six workers.

OSHA, in announcing $154,674 in proposed penalties for Foundation Food Group Inc., said that less than two months after the deadly incident workers were again subjected to a chemical release at the plant after it experienced an ammonia leak on March 11.

The citations include that for exposing workers to dermal and respiratory hazards associated with the potential unexpected release of anhydrous ammonia and for failing to install a system that protected employees. OSHA also accuses the company of other safety violations, including exposing workers to caught-in hazards near conveyor belts and failing to provide adequate training and ensure workers used locks to isolate hazardous energy while servicing conveyors.

Foundation Food Group, which has 15 business days to contest, could not be immediately reached for comment.
