If you like pina coladas, gettin’ caught up on emails

The lazy days of summer aren’t so lazy for many working Americans.

With the risk of falling behind work, 82% of them admitted to working on vacation, according to a recent survey by myperfectresume.com.

The resume advice site surveyed 1,000 workers on vacation and other time-off habits, finding that many pack their workload in their overnight bags alongside bathing suits and sunscreen.

Of those surveyed, 70% said they answer calls from clients or colleagues on vacation and 42% take vacation days specifically to do work. But the trend doesn’t stop with vacations: 75% of those surveyed say they have worked while out on parental leave and 40% of respondents worked on sick leave.

What’s behind this compulsion to work on days off? The survey found that 37% said “I just like to be on top of things” and 18% responded with, “I felt pressure from my colleagues.” 

So, what were some of the effects of working while on sick leave, vacation or parental leave? Thirty-nine percent said that missing time to relax/have fun was the main negative impact of working while on vacation.
