Bill would extend skin cancer presumption to parks, wildlife workers

The California Assembly Insurance Committee on Thursday unanimously approved a bill that would grant a skin cancer presumption to game wardens and state parks workers with law-enforcement responsibilities.

A.B. 334 would create a rebuttable presumption that skin cancer is an industrial illness for peace officers who work for the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Department of Parks and Recreation.

The presumption, which already applies to active state law-enforcement officers and lifeguards, would cover the specified wildlife and parks workers following termination for up to five years, accruing at a rate of three calendar months for each full year of service, according to the bill.

The bill will head to the Assembly’s Appropriations Committee.
