Washington Gov. Jay Inslee

Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee on Friday signed a bill that for the first time allows injured workers to receive lump-sum settlement payments.

S.B. 5046 piggybacks on a 2011 law that allowed injured workers in Washington to settle their claims. Provisions in that reform bill required that injured workers receive structured settlement payments.

The new law preserves the ability of workers to enter structured settlement agreements while also allowing them to receive settlement proceeds in a lump-sum payment.

The bill, which received unanimous support in both chambers of the legislature, included an emergency clause that made the bill take effect immediately when signed into law.
