Medical malpractice insurer Coverys Inc. said Thursday that president and CEO Gregg L. Hanson will retire effective March 31 and be succeeded by chief operating officer Joseph G. Murphy.

The Boston-based insurer said Mr. Murphy, who joined Coverys as chief operating officer in 2015, has played a pivotal role in execution of Coverys’ long-term strategic plan and overseen the insurer’s underwriting, business development and distribution, business analytics and risk management, claims and Coverys Insurance Services unit.

Before joining Coverys, he was Massachusetts insurance commissioner from 2009 to 2014.

Mr. Hanson began at Coverys as chief underwriting officer in 2000 and was promoted to president and CEO in 2012.
