Oftentimes, a human resources and office politics dilemma, the workplace holiday party question du jour is: Can we even have one in light of the COVID-19 pandemic? And how?

Alison Green, who fields workplace questions on her website Ask a Manager, covered the topic recently, writing that “usually at this time of year, my inbox fills up with questions about company holiday parties: How many drinks are OK to have there? Should I bring a date? Do I really have to go at all?”

And more recently it’s, “What do we even do for the holidays in a pandemic?,” she wrote.

“Many employers are simply canceling holiday celebrations, since there’s no way to safely gather. But some employers have devised celebrations that will keep people safe and actually sound fun.”

She posed the question to Ask a Manager readers in hopes to share how workplaces are observing the holiday and “it turns out companies have gotten really creative.”

Here’s some of what people reported, she wrote: cocktail-making kits sent to homes, chocolate and coffee tastings, themed gift boxes, remote gift exchanges, and online craft sessions all made the list.
