The Risk and Insurance Management Society’s 2021 annual convention and exhibition, to be held in Chicago April 18-21, 2021, is slated to be a hybrid in-person and virtual event, but may pivot to an entirely digital event.

“The conference is scheduled to be hybrid; however, circumstances may force RIMS to pivot to an entirely digital event,” RIMS said in information posted on its website.

The New York-based risk management organization said it continues to explore all options to provide a safe learning environment for RIMS 2021 and will keep the risk and insurance community updated as it works through the decision process.

A survey sent out Tuesday to risk managers, past attendees, exhibitors and others asked a series of questions designed to help RIMS plan the event.

Among the questions included: “Does your company have any policies (formal or informal) that may prohibit you from attending the 2021 RIMS Annual Conference if we hold it in-person? Such policies could include: travel, attending conferences, social distancing requirements, or any other policies.”

RIMS also asked whether, if the event were held in-person, risk professionals would attend in-person if their company had lifted any restrictions in place.

Registration for next year’s conference is scheduled to open Dec. 1.

The organization in March canceled its 2020 conference, scheduled for Denver, amid concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. This marked the first time that RIMS had canceled the event.

The annual meeting, one of the largest international insurance and risk management events, typically draws around 10,000 people from around the world.

It is not known whether RIMS had event cancelation or other insurance coverage in place for this year’s event. Its insurance broker is Aon PLC.
