Former A&A chairman John Bogardus dies

John A. Bogardus Jr., former chairman of Alexander & Alexander Services Inc., died in Scottsdale, Arizona, on June 28. He was 92.

Mr. Bogardus, who was known as Jack, spent his entire 45-year career at A&A, including as president and CEO. He retired as chairman in 1988. A&A was acquired by Aon Corp. in 1997.

Mr. Bogardus’ other positions included director of the Insurance Brokers Association of New York and a director and chairman of the National Assn. of Insurance Brokers’ governing committee.

After retirement, Mr. Bogardus co-authored Spreading the Risks: Insuring the American Experience with Robert H. Moore, former senior vice president, corporate relations for A&A. Mr. Moore issued the statement announcing Mr. Bogardus’ death.

A 2003 review in Business Insurance described the book as well-documented, describing in telling detail how the concept of risk evolved in the 20th century.

Mr. Bogardus is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lela, as well as four children, a sister, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, according to the statement issued by Mr. Moore.
