The American Society of Safety Professionals is the latest association to cancel its annual conference and shift to a virtual event because of the coronavirus pandemic, the society announced Thursday.

The Park Ridge, Illinois-based ASSP will hold its Safety 2020 conference as a virtual event June 23-25. The in-person event had been scheduled for the same dates in Orlando, Florida.

“We’ve been closely tracking coronavirus developments and examining all risk factors,” said Diana Stegall, ASSP president. “The progression of the pandemic has made it clear that the most prudent course of action for the safety and health of everyone involved is to present a virtual event.”

Currently, 60 sessions have been slated for the online event covering various workplace safety topics, with a question-and-answer period at the conclusion of each. Three keynote presentations are also planned, with one on the pandemic response and two plenary sessions on emerging trends and the impact of diversity and inclusion on profitability and safety.

Participants will still be able to earn continuing education units for attending, ASSP said.
