Rhode Island lawmakers on Friday introduced a bill that would expand workers compensation benefits to any school worker who works directly with students.

H.B. 7196, sponsored by five lawmakers, would amend current law, permitting comp coverage beyond teachers, supervisors and administrators to anybody “whose position within school directly involves work with students.”

The bill specifically addresses injuries sustained from school assaults and would add immunity from liability for districts in connection with violence, according the first draft.

The bill would go into effect upon passage.
