January 9

Today is the Friday the 13th of workplace safety, apparently.

At least that’s what Colorado’s largest workers compensation insurer revealed recently when it advised employees across the state: beware of Jan. 9, according to an article in The Gazette.

In crunching its own data, Denver-based Pinnacol Assurance Inc. found that an average of 198 employees suffer injuries on this date, the newspaper reported, highlighting that the most common of injuries are slips, trips and falls.

“It’s no surprise that we see a lot of these injuries,” Ellen Sarvay, a Pinnacol safety consultant, said in the article. “More awareness, preparation and caution in bad weather could help reduce these injuries significantly.”

Pinnacol also revealed that the risk was especially high for office workers and those in the health care industry.
