DHL International GmbH’s operations in Ireland and the United Kingdom suffer from what any enterprise can identify with at times: a too-small risk management department.
With only six people and in a busy time of claim activity, it can be chaotic, according to Julian Thomas, Milton Keynes, England-based head of systems, analytics and process for DHL.
Enter DHL Wall Board, DHL’s reconfiguration of a web-based risk management software created by Origami Risk LLC and its one-stop shop for managing claims and other risk management issues stemming from a Northern European operation of 600 DHL locations, 60,000 workers and 22,000 trucks.
In a photo provided by DHL, the program looks like it sounds: a glowing wall of screens as a large “board,” updated regularly to show the number of claims and incidents and where they are, both the location and in the process, among other details Mr. Thomas categorizes as a “health check tool” for claim activity.
DHL utilized Origami Risk’s software and configured it to work for the large logistics firm, according to Mr. Thomas. This gives the risk management team a better handle on claims with this “bird’seye view,” he said.
“Before this, we were being very reactive, we were finding out about a pile of (claims) because someone had said something to us about the team seeming slow; and then we would look and find that they had a pile of work or someone was out sick and the team had been falling behind,” he said. “We could find all the answers, but we had to go digging into different areas of the system to check on things.”
“We knew we needed alerts and visibility so that if there was a potential problem (with managing claims or workload) we could deal with it,” he said.
Physically, Wall Board is in place at two sites and PDF snapshots are emailed out to claims managers daily, according to Mr. Thomas, who hopes to see the technology expand to create data for analytics.
“We will use this functionality in a lot of different ways; right now, it is a live health and safety screen that serves as our notice board,” he said. “We want to know the number of days since the last accident or the trend of accidents over time; that’s always been analog or someone writing it down and posting it. My hope is to see statistics on this.”
