Australia fines shipper more than $23 million for running cartel

The Federal Court of Australia has fined Japanese automotive carrier Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. nearly $23.5 million for running a worldwide cartel with other shippers to fix ocean freight rates, Freight Waves reported. The price-fixing started in February 1997 and ended in September 2012 and included Japan-based Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd. and Nissan Motor Car Carrier Co. Ltd. among other shippers.
