Wildfire risk remains high in South Africa: Research

Research found that the risk of wildfires recurring in South Africa remains high after the 2017 Knysna fires caused an estimated 2 billion South African rand ($132 million) worth of damage, Algoa FM reported. John Melville, chief underwriting officer at South Africa-based Santam Ltd., urged insurers to require policyholders to undertake measures such as clearing fire-prone vegetation and other combustible material to reduce risk.
