Violation of sulfur emission rules could hit ships' insurance cover: IMO

U.K.-based International Maritime Organization said that ship owners' vessels could lose insurance coverage if they fail to comply with its new sulfur emission rules, Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide reported citing sources. The agency said that the ship owners could face fines and detainment of vessels if the ships used fuels with a sulfur content exceeding 0.5% compared with the current 3.5%. The new rules come into effect from January 2020.
