Rio catastrophes expose lack of readiness

Experts said that recent heavy rains, floods and landslides caused widespread damage in the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, driven by a lack of disaster mitigation strategies and illegal constructions in high-risk areas, Channel News Asia reported citing sources. The catastrophes struck the city on April 8 and April 9, killing more than 25 people.
