General insurers' premiums decline marginally, fire claims surge

Costa Rican general insurers' gross written premiums declined nearly 2% year over year to 392.5 billion Costa Rican colons ($656 million) while claims on fire policies surged 77% to nearly CRC 28 billion, BNamericas reported. Data from the insurance regulator showed that claims on fire policies increased despite fire premiums decreasing 3% to CRC 84 billion. Total premiums grew 3% to CRC 772 billion.
