(Reuters) — Hackers targeted "hundreds of thousands" of AsusTek Computer Inc. computer owners by pushing a backdoor update software tool from the computer maker's own servers, cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab said on Monday.
The attack took place between June and November 2018, according to Kaspersky.
The hackers were surgically targeting an unknown pool of users, who were identified by their network adapters' MAC addresses.
More than 57,000 Kaspersky users installed the backdoor version of ASUS Live Update, the report said.
Asus did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Analysis by U.S.-based cyber security firm Wandera Inc. found that more than one third of employees at insurers across the world suffered at least one mobile phishing attack in 2017, ITProportal.com reported. The analysis found that hackers are increasingly targeting employees' mobile devices through various messaging services and apps installed on the mobile devices, the analysis added.
