Car insurance bounty hunter takes to streets of Oklahoma

Oklahoma drivers without liability insurance are on notice.

A state contractor is roaming the streets of Oklahoma City and Tulsa in search of uninsured vehicles to help initiate a legal process that can lead to fines for those who aren’t following the state’s mandatory liability insurance law, The Tulsa World reported Monday.

Four vehicle-mounted camera units are working the beat statewide and soon will be concentrating on the high-traffic areas of Oklahoma City and Tulsa, the newspaper reported, adding that pole-mounted cameras are also in the works.

The units are set to take pictures of license tags and compare the plates to the state’s insured vehicle database. Drivers without insurance are flagged and fined.

After the state checks reported uninsured vehicles, $174 violation notices are sent. The contractor gets $80 of that amount, according to the newspaper, which reported 2,100 initial violations in the first few weeks.
