Epidemic: ‘Anna’ and her health insurance robocall cohorts

The latest health epidemic has nothing to do with viruses.

With health insurance open-enrollment season in full swing, automated phone calls offering Affordable Care Act or other health plans are spiking to “epidemic levels,” Aaron Foss, founder of Nomorobo, a spam-call-blocking service, told The Washington Post last week.

Mr. Foss estimated more than 850,000 health-related robocalls were made to American consumers in October — nearly five times September’s numbers, according to the newspaper.

And California, whose open-enrollment period is twice as long as those in other parts of the country, is afflicted the worst, the Post reported.

Nomorobo tracked about 820 robocall pitches for health insurance in the last week of October, according to the article. More than 100 of them were from a robot named “Anna.”
