Martin P. Hughes to receive Crain Lifetime Achievement award

Martin P. Hughes, executive chairman of the board of directors of Hub International Inc., has been named the recipient of the 2019 Crain Lifetime Achievement award for outstanding accomplishments in the insurance and risk management sector.

He will receive the award at the Business Insurance U.S. Insurance Awards on March 21, 2019, in New York, the publication said Tuesday in a statement.

Mr. Hughes has more than 40 years of experience in the insurance brokerage industry. His career began as a salesman in 1973 at Mack and Parker Inc. — now a part of Hub International Midwest Ltd. — where he served as president from 1990-1999 and as chairman from 1999-2001. At Hub International, Mr. Hughes served as CEO and chairman beginning in December 1999. During his 20 years of leadership, Hub continued to experience strong organic growth and increased revenue. As of Jan. 1, 2018, Mr. Hughes became executive chairman. Recently, he was elected 2019 chairman of the Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers.

“We are thrilled to recognize Marty with Business Insurance’s most prestigious award,” Adam Potter, CEO of Business Insurance, said in the statement. “He’ll be joining our past recipients Patrick G. Ryan, chairman and CEO of Ryan Specialty Group L.L.C., and Maurice R. Greenberg, chairman and CEO of C.V. Starr & Co. Inc., in the Business Insurance Hall of Fame.”

“I’m honored to receive this year’s Crain Lifetime Achievement award and to join Pat Ryan and Hank Greenberg — our industry’s most influential leaders — in the Business Insurance Hall of Fame,” Mr. Hughes said in the statement. “The role of a broker is evolving, and a client’s needs and expectations of their broker are changing fairly dramatically. As I continue to witness this evolution of the industry, I am in awe of the fact that I’ve been fortunate enough to experience what a difference our work can make for our clients.”

Mr. Hughes earned his degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and currently serves as a board member for Mount Carmel High School. In addition, Mr. Hughes is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago and the Executives’ Club of Chicago.

The Crain Lifetime Achievement award recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the risk management and insurance sector over the course of their careers. The award is named in honor of the Crain family, which founded Business Insurance. The late G.D. Crain, the founder of Crain Communications Inc., conceived the idea for the publication and his son, Rance Crain, was the publication’s first editor.
