Grenfell Towers fire looms large on construction industry risk

Anjon Mallik, partner at U.K.-based law firm Gordons L.L.P., said that a rise in insurance rates and availability for cladding subcontractors has left general contractors exposed to significant liabilities construction projects, The Construction Index reported. Mr. Mallik said that subcontractors are unable to buy professional indemnity insurance following the rise in rates due to the Grenfell Tower fire. The contractors could be exposed to fire, repair and replacement costs, he added. Several insurance policies also contain exclusions for damage related to combustible cladding panels, Mr. Mallik said.
