Halloween must-haves: Tricks, treats and insurance

Stolen lawn decorations, car eggings and jack o’ lanterns set aflame are just some of the Halloween mishaps that one might need insurance to cover, reported Marketwatch.com on Wednesday.

In a post highlighting everything that can go wrong in the season of witches and goblins, the personal finance site is telling consumers that such products as car insurance to protect against vandalism, homeowners insurance to cover mischief night occurrences such as toilet paper strewn outside of the house, and fire insurance to protect homes against décor mishaps are not to be forgotten.

“In 2016, insurance claims related to car vandalism increased on Halloween and the days before and after,” reported Kevin Quinn, vice president of claims at Mercury Insurance Group, adding that raw eggs, pumpkins and rocks are all common projectiles, according to the article.

Meanwhile, homeowners and renters policies often cover stolen outdoor decorations, the article states, adding, “just be sure you’ve saved the receipts and made a police report.”

Yet beware of small claims: “If damaged or stolen items are worth less than your deductible, it’s not worth making an insurance claim,” according to the article, which first appeared on NerdWallet.com.
