Engineering firms face insurance challenges post Grenfell fire

Insurers are refusing to provide professional indemnity cover to U.K.-based engineering firms that have worked on building projects with cladding similar to that used on the Grenfell Tower, New Civil Engineer reported. Matt Farman, director of professional indemnity at U.K.-based Howden Insurance Brokers Ltd., said that insurers are increasingly including restrictions and exclusions in indemnity cover leaving the firms open to potential legal action. Tests of cladding combinations after the June 2017 Grenfell Tower fire found that several buildings failed fire safety tests.
