Alleged travel insurance fraudster claim fails spell test

An Australian man who allegedly forged a receipt provided in a travel-insurance claim that aimed to recoup money from a camera he said was stolen in a high-speed chase in Fiji apparently lost his dictionary, too.

The traveler claimed to his insurer 1Cover Travel Insurance that he had been targeted by a thief who robbed him of his backpack and new camera worth $6,300, www.news.com.au reported Monday.

According to his tale, he jumped into his car to chase the thief but could not catch up, so he reported the crime to the local police, who also could not find the crook or recover the stolen camera, according to the report.

Included in his travel-insurance claim was proof of purchase of the alleged stolen camera. The receipt seemed authentic until a closer look revealed a litany of misspellings: “taxable” had been spelled “tacable,” “basement” in the store’s address was spelled “basemant,” and “approved” had only one “p,” according to the media outlet.

The insurance company became suspicious and investigated the claim as possible fraud, the outlet reported.
