Canadian man transitions to lower car insurance premiums

“Wanna save big on car insurance?”

It sounds like a commercial, but one Canadian man saved more than 50% on car insurance by changing his gender to “female” on some official documents, according to the New York Post, citing a report on the Canadian Broadcasting System.

Upon receiving a quote for auto insurance, the 24-year old man discovered the yearly bill would be $1,100 less if he were female. He only need be listed as such on government documents like a birth certificate.

Sensing opportunity, the man consulted a physician, telling the doctor he “identified as a woman.” The doctor wrote a letter to that effect.

The man then submitted the letter along with his request to have his gender changed to female on his birth certificate. The new birth certificate, listing him as female, came in three weeks.

Subsequently changing his gender to female on his driver’s license saved him $91 per month, according to the Post

Men under age 25 are more at risk of getting into a car accident than women the same age, which often makes their insurance premiums higher, according the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the Post reported.
