Slumbering DMV worker proves costly for California

Sleeping on the job has wider implications than workplace safety, as illustrated in a SFGate.com report of an audit that found a California Department of Motor Vehicles clerk slept at her desk three hours a day, costing the state $40,000 in stolen time.

The worker spent four years wasting 2,200 man hours, delaying the processing of change-of-address forms and shirking other duties, the news outlet reported Wednesday.

Co-workers were said to have complained, and her supervisors made notes regarding her three-hour daily naps on performance evaluations, but the DMV told auditors it could not take disciplinary action against the employee because her behavior had not been properly documented, according to the report.

Instead, the DMV in March issued a warning that she could be disciplined for future on-the-job naps, according to the SFGate.com.
