Clinical laboratory firm reports possible data breach

A major clinical laboratory firm, Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings, which conducts business as LabCorp, said it has detected a possible data breach.

The Burlington, North Carolina-based firm said in a Form 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday that over the July 14 weekend it detected “suspicious activity” in its information technology network.

“LabCorp immediately took certain systems offline as part of its comprehensive response to contain this activity,” said the filing.

“At this time, there is no evidence of unauthorized transfer or misuse of data,” the filing said. LabCorp has notified the relevant authorities of the suspicious activity and will cooperate in any investigation, according to the filing.

It said the incident temporarily affected testing and customer access to test results, although testing operations were substantially resumed as of Monday, and the company anticipates additional systems and functions will be restored over the next several days.

The filing is signed by F. Samuel Eberts III, the company’s chief legal officer and secretary. LabCorp reported net revenues of more than $10 billion in 2017.

A company spokesman could not immediately be reached for further comment.

Macy’s warned its customers of a data breach earlier this month.
