Lawsuit over Prince-related tot video goes crazy long

The lawsuit that pitted a YouTube-posting mother gushing over her bouncing tot to Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” and the owners of all Prince’s works went a little nuts: the dancing baby is now 12 and reportedly in middle school as parties reached a settlement Tuesday.

It started in 2007 when Stephanie Lentz posted a 29-second video of her 18-month-old son Holden Lentz dancing to the Prince song with his little push toy. Universal Music Publishing Group, citing copyright infringement, demanded the video be removed. Electronic Frontier Foundation got involved, filing a suit against the music publisher, arguing that Ms. Lentz’s video concerns fair-use laws, as reported by the music and technology news site arstechnica.com.

After the Supreme Court declined to hear the case last year, the two parties agreed that Universal Music must have a more “fair” process for takedown orders of videos. Ms. Lentz praised its decision: "If UMPG's current processes had been in place 11 years ago when I posted my video of my young son dancing, I probably wouldn't have had to contact the Electronic Frontier Foundation," she told a reporter.
