Insurer faces hefty fines, lawsuits following cyber attack

South Africa-based insurer Liberty Group Ltd. could face regulatory fines amounting to millions of South African rand and civil lawsuits after suffering a cyber attack on June 14, Moneyweb reported. Hackers breached the insurer's information technology systems and are likely to have accessed clients’ personal information such as identification numbers, medical reports and banking details. The insurer faces fines of up to 10 million South African rand ($729,353) for each data breach under the country's Protection of Personal Information Act.
