Texas hailstorm insured damage estimated at $1 billion

A June 6 hailstorm in Texas caused almost $1 billion in insured damages, according to a report Tuesday from Karen Clark & Co.

Baseball-sized hail in Dallas, Tarrant, and Denton counties damaged some 20,000 residential structures and 25,000 automobiles, according to initial estimates from the Insurance Council of Texas, the Clark report said.

The Boston-based catastrophe modeler said the bulk of the estimated $1 billion in insured losses to residential and commercial properties and automobiles is expected to be in Texas.

The majority of residential and commercial damage is expected to occur to roofs, windows, skylights and solar panels, the report said.

The storm produced destructive hail for nearly an hour, with significant damage to automobiles in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and baseball-sized hailstones were reported in Carrollton and Coppell, Texas.
