XL Catlin hires back excess casualty executive

XL Group Ltd. has recruited Donnacha Smyth back from rival Aspen Insurance Holdings Ltd. to be president of its global excess casualty operations.

Mr. Smyth, who is based in Dublin, will lead all global excess casualty teams, including North America, Dublin and Bermuda, for the insurer, which does business as XL Catlin, according to a statement from the insurer. He replaces Barbara Luck as president of the unit. Ms. Luck left XL Catlin to join American International Group Inc. in May.

Mr. Smyth was international head of excess casualty for Aspen Insurance, but he was previously chief excess casualty officer for XL Catlin from 2007 to 2016, an XL Catlin statement said.

In addition, XL Catlin named Bermuda-based Carla Greaves chief underwriting officer, global excess casualty. Previously, she led XL Catlin’s excess casualty underwriting for Bermuda, according to the statement. Ms. Greaves replaces Diane Amodeo, who is retiring, an XL Catlin spokeswoman said.
