OSHA cites underground utility construction firm for cave-in hazards

U.S. workplace safety regulators have cited a Florida underground utility construction company for exposing employees to cave-in hazards and proposed $138,927 in penalties.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Daytona Beach, Florida-based P&S Paving Inc. for allowing employees to work in a trench without cave-in protection, according to a statement Thursday. The company was also cited for failing to train employees on trench hazards and provide a safe means to enter and exit the trench.

“Employers performing trenching and excavation are required to use appropriate protective systems to prevent a serious or fatal cave-in,” Brian Sturtecky, OSHA Jacksonville area office director, said in the statement.

A company spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.
