Axis funding risk management academy at University of Illinois

Axis Capital Holdings Ltd. said Tuesday it had established the Axis Risk Management Academy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Under a five-year agreement with the university, the Pembroke, Bermuda-based specialty insurance company said in a statement it will invest $1.5 million to fund the management of the academy and provide research opportunities, along with professional development resources and experiences, for students interested in careers in risk management.

The academy will work closely with the University of Illinois Office of Risk Management and Insurance Research and will cater to students from multiple disciplines across campus, Axis said.

The university said in a statement that the academy is not a degree-granting or credit-earning program and has been set up to invite students from across campus to participate, particularly those who are interested in a career in risk management.

Students meet twice per month to discuss related topics, the university said, listen to guest speakers and engage with the industry, including engaging with Axis employees who are based at the University of Illinois office. Students will be working on specific research, case competitions, student presentations and other activities as opportunities emerge.

The inaugural class of the Academy has been formed for the Spring 2018 semester.

Axis established an on-campus presence with the university in 2013 through its Axis Research Center, which will now work with the Axis Risk Management Academy, providing support through mentoring and internships for students in risk management-related disciplines.
