Markel CATCo pays $400 million in cat claims

Bermuda-based collateralized reinsurance and retrocessional investment fund manager Markel CATCo Investment Management Ltd. paid out more than $400 million in catastrophe-related claims from its listed retro fund in 2017, Artemis.bm reports. The claims were related to hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria and the California wildfires. Markel grew its overall assets under management to more than $6 billion this year despite the losses.
