Japanese cryptocurrency exchange hit by $54-million theft

Japan-based cryptocurrency exchange operator Coincheck Inc. plans to compensate about 260,000 victims after hackers stole about $54 million worth of cryptocurrency from the firm's exchange, The Mainichi reported. Coincheck said that the theft is likely to have occurred after several employees opened emails containing malware software. The country's financial regulator imposed a business improvement order twice on Coincheck for insufficient awareness about customer protection.
