Oregon bill exempts amateur athletes from comp coverage

The Oregon House of Representatives passed a bill Tuesday that would exempt amateur athletes from workers compensation coverage.

According to H.B. 4093, an amateur athlete is someone who has been declared an amateur athlete under the rules of the U.S. Olympic Committee or the Canadian Olympic Committee.

H.B. 4093 passed in a 35-23 vote and specifies that an amateur athlete is a “non-subject worker for purposes of workers comp and is not employee for purposes of certain employment-related provisions when amateur athlete is training or conditioning for, and participating in, amateur sports activities for amateur sports organization,” according to the bill’s latest text.

The bill will head to the Oregon Senate.
