Maurice R. Greenberg to receive 2018 Crain Lifetime Achievement Award

Maurice R. Greenberg will receive the 2018 Crain Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding accomplishments in the insurance and risk management sector at the Business Insurance U.S. Insurance Awards on March 8 in New York.

Mr. Greenberg is chairman and CEO of Starr Cos., a global insurance and investment organization. Starr was founded by Cornelius Vander Starr in 1919 in Shanghai and is one of the fastest-growing insurers in the world. Mr. Greenberg formed American International Group Inc. as a Starr subsidiary, and served as that company’s chairman and CEO until March 2005.

He serves as honorary vice chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations, as vice chairman of the National Committee on United States-China Relations, and as a member of the board of the US-China Business Council. He is the past chairman and director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Mr. Greenberg is also the chairman of The Starr Foundation, one of the largest private charitable foundations in the United States.

A decorated United States veteran, Mr. Greenberg served in both World War II and the Korean conflict, rising to the rank of captain and awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Greenberg also was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his service on D-Day on Omaha Beach in World War II.

The Crain Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the risk management and insurance sector over the course of their careers. The award is named in honor of the Crain family, which founded Business Insurance. The late G.D. Crain, the founder of Crain Communications Inc., conceived the idea for the publication and his son, Rance Crain, was the publication’s first editor.
