PTSD bill for first responders moves forward in Florida House

A bill that would allow first responders to receive workers compensation benefits for post-traumatic stress disorder moved forward in a Florida House of Representatives committee on Tuesday.

In Florida, first responders are not eligible for workers comp benefits for mental trauma. H.B. 227 applies to firefighters, paramedics, emergency medical technicians and law enforcement officers and would cover “a mental or nervous injury, whether or not such injury is accompanied by a physical injury requiring medical treatment,” according to the bill’s latest text.

The bill must get through two other committees before it moves to the Senate.

A similar bill in the Florida Senate moved to the appropriations committee on Jan. 17.
