Giants player brought down by comp fraud

The New York Giants had a horrid season on the field, and now one of their former players is having a bad time off of it.

Marcus Buckley, 46, of Weatherford, Texas, who played football for the Giants for seven years, was sentenced in a California court to 24 months in prison and ordered to pay $1.6 million in restitution for participating in a scheme to defraud a Sacramento business that managed workers compensation claims.

In 2006, Mr. Buckley filed a workers comp claim against the Giants for cumulative stress injuries sustained while playing football. In November 2010, Mr. Buckley, the Giants and the team’s comp insurer, Pennsylvania Manufacturer’s Association Insurance Group, settled his claim for $300,000.

He later filed requests for additional reimbursement, backing these claims with fake documentation including invoices, medical provider statements and credit collection notices related to allegedly past-due medical bills.

At least he doesn’t have to watch the 3-13 Giants not play in the Super Bowl this weekend.
