The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has reached a $340,000 settlement with a Louisville, Kentucky-based restaurant chain that it charged with harassing 15 former female employees, including teenagers.
Managers at four stores owned by Indi’s Fast Food Restaurant Inc. subjected female employees to longstanding sexual harassment, including requests for sexual favors, sexually offensive comments and unwanted sexual touching, the EEOC said Monday in a statement.
The chain was charged with violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Under terms of the consent decree resolving the case, Indi’s must send letters of the apology to the women, among other provisions.
“No one should have to endure sexual harassment just to pay their rent and feed their families,” Louisville-based EEOC senior trial attorney Aimee L. McFerren said in a statement. “Protecting vulnerable workers, including low-wage earners and teenagers, is a top priority for the EEOC. We hope this case sends a clear message that the EEOC will hold accountable employers who fail to protect their employees from workplace harassment.”
A spokesman for Indi’s could not immediately be reached for comment.
Also on Monday, a company that operates prisons agreed to pay $550,000 to settle an EEOC sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit.
A U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh has ordered a medical health center to pay $55,500 in damages in the first sexual orientation discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the agency said Monday.
