Taking risks in her career has provided Janice Hamilton with opportunities to take on new and challenging roles and to swiftly rise to the role of chief financial officer of a division of a Fortune 500 company while still in her thirties.
An accountant by training, she left Ernst & Young five years ago to join Lloyd’s of London firm Jubilee Managing Agency Ltd., which was acquired by rival ANV Holdings B.V., which itself was purchased by U.S. insurer AmTrust Financial Services Inc.
Over the course of that time, Ms. Hamilton has played an integral part in the company’s transformation. She was named chief financial officer of AmTrust International, a unit of AmTrust Financial Services Inc., earlier this year.
“I have worked very hard over my career, each time never fully prepared for the next step. But with the trust and confidence of the management and finance teams, I was able to grow into each role,” she said.
One of the best pieces of advice she has ever been given, she said, is to “always go with your first instinct.”
“I know it is not strictly career advice, but I reflect on this almost every day and consider it one of the most useful pieces of advice I have ever received,” she said.
To women entering the industry, she advises that they “never be afraid to be the only woman in the room.” But that should not be the status quo, she said, and women should help try to improve the gender balance in senior insurance positions.
In an effort to improve the balance, mentoring and coaching others is part of Ms. Hamilton’s day-to-day work.
“It is so important to me that individuals are well-equipped to perform their roles and know that they can trust the management team to have succession planning and talent mapping as important objectives,” she said.
“I am delighted that Janice has been selected as one of this year’s Women to Watch honorees,” said Lynsey Cross, chief operating officer at AmTrust International and herself a Women to Watch honoree last year. “As a market-leading finance director, her energy, vision and insight have been key to driving the success of AmTrust at Lloyd’s. She has fantastic leadership qualities and empowers her team to grow and develop in their roles.”
