Barbican expands to US southeast coast with specialty MGA

London-based Barbican Insurance Group has established a wholesale excess and surplus lines property insurance managing general agent that will focus on small to medium-sized commercial operations along the United States’ southeastern coast, the insurer said Thursday.

Barbican Specialty US, which will be based in Atlanta and Kansas City, Missouri, will focus primarily on multiperil insurance products for risks such as wind/hail and “all other perils” including flood and earthquake, Barbican said in a statement.

The company’s regional scope will extend from Virginia to Texas and provide coverage for commercial operation including retail outlets, condominiums, nursing homes and hotels, the statement said.

The operation is led by Colin Mayo, who was previously executive vice president and chief underwriting officer at Ariel Specialty, a unit of Hamilton, Bermuda-based Argo Group International Holdings Ltd.

Bob Losasso, previously senior vice president of property E&S at Ariel Specialty, will serve as head of property and insurance operations; and Kim Thomas, previously vice president of risk management at Ariel Specialty, will serve as chief risk officer.
