Massachusetts insurance commissioner named

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has appointed Gary D. Anderson as commissioner of the state’s division of insurance, the state Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation said Tuesday. 

Mr. Anderson, who joined the division in 2014 as first deputy commissioner, has been the acting commissioner since February, when former Commissioner Daniel Judson stepped down to become president of the Workers Compensation Rating and Inspection Bureau.

He oversees and monitors roughly $53 billion industry with over 1,600 licensed insurance companies and about 126,000 insurance agents licensed to do business in Massachusetts, the consumer affairs office said in a statement.

Based in Boston, Mr. Anderson will report to John Chapman, undersecretary of the office of consumer affairs and business regulation. Prior to his roles at the division of insurance, Mr. Anderson was a policy advisor and senior counsel in the Massachusetts State Senate President’s Office. Prior to that, he was general counsel for the state Senate’s financial services committee.
